What is HPE Morpheus Software and who is it for?
HPE Morpheus Enterprise Software is a hybrid cloud management and platform engineering solution that helps IT deliver applications faster and more consistently across on-premises and public clouds.
It was engineered to reimagine how enterprises manage VMs, containers, and applications across multiple environments. Instead of teams stitching together separate tools, Morpheus provides a single framework to:
- Provision and manage VMs, containers, bare metal, app services, and multi-tier stacks into any connected private or public cloud.
- Standardize and automate lifecycle tasks (startup, shutdown, reconfigure, teardown) using tools like Ansible, Chef, Salt, PowerShell, and Bash.
- Offer self-service via GUI catalog, ITSM plugins (e.g., ServiceNow), IaC providers, full API/CLI, and CI/CD pipelines.

Licensing is also structured to be predictable: on-premises usage is licensed per physical CPU socket, and public cloud workloads are factored at a 15 workloads to 1 socket ratio (for example, 15 AWS EC2 instances consume one socket license).
What deployment, runtime, and licensing options are available?
HPE Morpheus Enterprise is a software-based appliance that can be deployed in several ways to match your scale and availability needs.
Deployment architectures
Morpheus is organized into four tiers: Application, Transactional Database, Non-Transactional Database, and Message. These can be combined or separated:
- Single Host (All-In-One) – All tiers run on one host; this is the default configuration.
- Single Host with Distributed Services – Database and/or Message tiers are externalized; remaining services stay on a single host.
- 3-Node HA Cluster – Application, Message, and Non-Transactional tiers are clustered across three or more hosts, pointing to an externalized Transactional Database.
- Full HA with Distributed Services – Application tier runs on one or more hosts, all pointing to externalized Transactional, Non-Transactional, and Message tiers; can be same-region or cross-region.

Built-in runtime options
- HPE VME (KVM-based hypervisor) – Deploy and manage HPE’s KVM hypervisor clusters with external storage support, VM live migration, storage live migration, and data protection.
- HPE Kubernetes Service (HKS) – A CNCF-certified Kubernetes runtime that can be deployed on any attached cloud, including components like Prometheus, Grafana, and Calico.
- Support for custom Kubernetes layouts (e.g., Rancher K3s, Red Hat OpenShift, upstream Kubernetes) and cloud-managed services such as AWS EKS, Azure AKS, and Google GKE.
- Centralized views of VME and Kubernetes cluster health, metrics, logs, and lifecycle across environments.
Licensing and services
- Offered as term-based licensed software (not SaaS), suitable for environments with strict security requirements.
- Licensed per physical CPU socket for connected on-premises clouds (bare metal, hypervisor hosts, Kubernetes worker nodes).
- Public cloud workloads are counted at a 15 workloads = 1 socket ratio.
- Available in 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year terms for new installs and renewals.
- Upgrade paths from HPE Morpheus VM Essentials to full Enterprise are available, with 1-, 3-, and 5-year options.
